In Memory – H. Steward Dunn

We are sad to report the death of 2011 Living Legend of Alexandria H. Stewart Dunn on September 27.

Stew Dunn was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa., one of five children, the son of a lawyer and a homemaker. He graduated from Yale University in 1951 with a BA in political science and then earned an LLB, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law in 1954, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Three years in the Army followed, including time in the Judge Advocate General Corps stationed in Washington. After the Army, he decided to pursue his legal career in Washington.  He moved to Alexandria after marrying his wife Loti in 1978  and became active in the Old Town Civic Association. He was appointed to the Alexandria Human Rights Commission in 1983. In the late 1980s, he was selected to serve on a commission to revise the existing zoning code. Council adopted the revisions in 1992.  Dunn served on the Board of Zoning Appeals and he has been on the Planning Commission since 1995.  Dunn had a lifelong fascination with history and was a trustee of the Historic Alexandria Foundation for more than 20 years.  Of all the activities in which he participated, the one he regarded as the most important was his service as a board member and policy maker for the area American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

A memorial service will be planned for October or November.
