Nina Tisara Showcases “Sanctuary” Photo Collection
An Evening of Art and Music
Selected black and white photographs from Nina Tisara’s “Sanctuary” series are currently on exhibit in the Commons Fireplace Alcove of Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria, through February 18. The work portrays a particular stand of trees entwined by old grapevines at Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County. Tisara’s first impression of the scene was of dancers in a sacred space. It was winter and the tree trunks cast strong shadows in the late afternoon sun. It reminded her of a cathedral. Tisara returned again and again to photograph the trees in different light and in different seasons – in fog, in spring and in snow. Later she recreated some of the scenes in porcelain mosaic tile, the medium in which she now works.
Huntley Meadows is a 1554 acre wildlife sanctuary of meadow, woodland and wetland operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority.
A closing reception for the reception will be held on February 18, 6:30-7:15, followed by a concert by Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra beginning at 7:30 p.m. The self-directed orchestra will perform Prokofiev – Peter and the Wolf, Grieg – Peer Gynt Suite #1 and Prokofiev – Lt Kije Suite. The concert is free but donations are welcome.
Some of Tisara’s new mosaics will also be on view for the first time.
