Message from the President
We are building something special! Two new essentials enhance our mission:
After many months of work we are finally opening a brand new website and a new web address as well. You will soon notice that our old web address (www.alexandrialegends.com) will migrate to our new address: www.alexandrialegends.org. You will notice a lot of changes to the site including better access to information about our Living Legends, improved searching capabilities, more news to keep you up to date, and enhanced on line ticketing and purchasing capabilities. This is a big step for Living Legends of Alexandria and we owe many thanks to the team at Potomac Management Resources for all their hard work. It will continue to be a “work in process” with lots of improvements to come. Going forward we need your feedback…please let us know what you think and where we can improve.
We are also announcing our year-end fundraising campaign with a brand new twist. We can now accept ongoing monthly donations payable by credit card. For most of us, the ability to make small donations throughout the year is a much more convenient way to support Living Legends. We are trying to attract 100 of our supporters to commit to donate $10 or $20 each month (or any amount they choose, actually) and if we are successful this will close the fundraising gap we now have. You can cancel at any time, of course. We hope you will support this effort and will sign up for this right away.
One more thing: Like so many on our board of directors (and our Legends in general) Bill Kehoe has recently been recognized for his many years of service as a volunteer in our community. Rebuilding Together Alexandria awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award to Bill for his many years of service improving the lives and homes of Alexandrians in need. We congratulate him for this award and thank him for his continued service.

2014 Living Legend of Alexandria Carson Lee Fifer, Jr.

When you ask Lissette Bishins (Executive Director of the Carpenter’s Shelter) about Lee Fifer, she will tell you that he “is a lifelong Alexandrian who is a passionate advocate for those in need. His touch is all over Alexandria. He loves this city and the people in it; he is philanthropic and drives others to follow his lead.”
Although recently retired, his professional career started when he joined the law firm of Boothe, Prichard and Dudley (now McGuireWoods) in 1972. He maintained a practice focused on land use and environmental law, real estate law, affordable housing and sports law. He managed numerous residential, commercial, industrial and institutional projects including regional malls, corporate parks and planned communities and has guided projects that have produced thousands of residential units. Fifer co-authored the first affordable housing ordinance in Virginia and has authored subsequent enabling legislation.

Reflections

Two of Alexandria’s Living Legends, Rosa Byrd, 2013, and Bill Kehoe, 2012, were recent guests at MacArthur Elementary School’s PTA Reflection Art Night. Speaking from their own personal experiences, their messages related to this year’s Reflection’s theme, “The world would be a better place if …”.

Reflections is an arts recognition and achievement program for students sponsored by the National PTA. ACPS students are encouraged to produce an original, artistic entry in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. The most imaginative interpretation of the theme through any one of these mediums is the object of the program.

BB&T Open House
BB&T Bank is hosting an exhibition of portraits of African American and women Living Legends of Alexandria at its Old Town branches through January 2. The branches at 1717 King Street and 300 S. Washington Street are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Fridays.
In celebration of the exhibition, the community was invited to an open house at the King Street branch on October 1.

Thank You for your Nominations
Each year around this time, we’re asked whether we’ll run out of nominations for Living Legends. We don’t think so–we received 29 this year! The board will be reviewing them in early January and announcing the Legends of 2015 shortly thereafter. The Legends will be formally introduced at the “Meet the Legends” reception on March 19 at the U.S. Patent and Trade Office.
