Message from the President
A very quick greeting!
Please read your Gazette Packet and AlexandriaNews.org in the weeks ahead to see the pictures and a sentence or two about each of our nominees for the 2015 Living Legends. Our selection committee will be meeting in mid-January to make the final selections.
In order to keep the Living Legends project going we need your financial support. Our campaign this season is to enlist 100 of you to become sustaining donors. Please consider setting up a small contribution in any amount to be paid from your credit card each month. It is easy to do, very safe, and you can stop at any time with a simple email. Please go here to get this going right away!
I am so happy (happy, happy) that we are finally in the season where, with a low fear of criticism, I can listen to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. 2014 Living Legend of Alexandria Ramona K. Hatten

For over thirty years, Ramona K. Hatten has been involved in community service in Alexandria. Hatten graduated from Mount Vernon College with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. Since then, she has used her professional skills to help low income and public housing residents improve their quality of life. Hatten has encouraged them to become involved in civic activities, the PTA, voter registration and public demonstrations for justice. She was a grass roots campaign worker on Joyce Woodson’s City Council win.
Hatten was an Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority (ARHA) commissioner from 1982 to 1990. In 1988, she was instrumental in the formation of the Alexandria Resident Council (ARC) to assure public housing resident input into ARHA decisions effecting public housing tenants. In 1991, she lobbied city council to establish a resident slot on the ARHA board.

Scottish Christmas Walk
Living Legends proudly marched in December’s Scottish Walk helping kick off the holiday season in Alexandria. Once again Dash provided a trolley flashing Living Legends for the Legends.

Archaeology Award
Board member Pamela Cressey received the 2014 Bernard “Ben” Brenman award in November as outstanding City Archaeologist. The award was presented by councilwoman Del Pepper during the Alexandria Archaeology Volunteer Appreciation Party on November 15.

Getting Around
Living Legends was welcomed by the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association (WMPA) to display its traveling exhibition at its December 7 concert at Convergence. Honor a Legend with a brick in King Street Gardens Park
King Street Garden Park Foundation (KSGPF) has generously offered a 2-line brick in King Street Gardens Park to Alexandria Living Legends for $100, a saving of $25. The award-winning park is located at the intersections of King Street and Daingerfield and Diagonal Roads.
The 2-line brick might say the Legend’s name and the year he/she was named a Legend, for example:
George Washington
LLA – 1789
Note there is a limit of 15 characters per line.
When there is a minimum of 50 bricks purchased from all sources, we anticipate the bricks being ordered in the spring for a summer installation. Bricks honoring a Legend will be installed in the Living Legend “vein.”
The funds received for the bricks are earmarked for improvements such as lighting, irrigation, landscaping, maintenance and information systems.
