Message from the President
Dear Friends,
The Last month we asked our supporters to share email addresses so we could expand the number of people in our community who get information about Living Legends. Several did share. If you are receiving this newsletter for the first time, you may wonder why in the world you would want to get this information. Please take a few minutes to read the rest of this newsletter and visit our website www.AlexandriaLegends.com. You will probably find a photo and story about one of your friends, neighbors or coworkers. You may be amazed to learn something you enjoy about living or working in Alexandria would not be there if that person hadn’t made it happen. In a nutshell, Living Legends searches out those people who make a difference. It creates a historical record of their story and it does what is often forgotten…says Thank You!
I hope you will become a part of the LLA community. Although you have the option to unsubscribe at the bottom of each newsletter, I sure hope you won’t.
The process of identifying, thanking and chronicling the Legends takes almost as much hard work as what they did to earn the honor. Our board is always looking for ideas and support from the community. We try to make it as easy as possible to send us your thoughts and as much fun as possible to help us raise the money needed to keep this program going. Since founding the program some eight years ago, Nina Tisara has done the vast majority of the work. Now she is ready to move on to new projects and, while she will never leave the Legends entirely, she hopes the community will step up and take over. As she has made it possible for us to thank over 170 Alexandrians, we have a chance to thank her by keeping her dream alive.
At a recent board meeting several ways to accomplish this goal were explored:
- Attend MetroStage Theatre night on Saturday, September 20th: llatheatrenight.eventbrite.com. See details below.
- Become a Sustaining Supporter with a monthly credit card donation. We have a couple of donors in this brand new category but there is unlimited room for more. Sign up and feel warm and fuzzy every month!
- Make a one-time credit card donation. Choose from the following opportunities:
$ 100 – Sponsors a child in a Family Legends Workshop
$ 250 – Sponsors a Legends exhibition print
$ 500 – Sponsors a video segment of “In Their Own Voices”
$1000 – Sponsors the Living Legends Catalog
$1500 – Sponsors the Living Legends Traveling Exhibition
$2500 – Sponsors the Market Square City Hall Exhibition
For options (2) and (3), see the PayPal donate link on our website.
As I close this letter I want to thank Victoria Almquist for serving on the board. We have appreciated her ideas and support and are sorry to lose her. We are however happy to welcome two new board members. We are excited about the skills and enthusiasm Cindy Savery and Billie Morin are adding. Read more about them elsewhere in this newsletter.
Thank you, as always, for your support!
Pam St. Clair
President

Civil Rights Sunday
The Alexandria Black History Museum and Living Legends of Alexandria collaborated to present an interactive program about Civil Rights, locally and nationally. Museum director and Living Legends board member Audrey Davis opened the program with an overview of the featured exhibition, “Sit Down and Take a Stand.” The exhibition commemorates the 75th anniversary of the 1939 Alexandria Library sit-in. Former federal hate crimes prosecutor Howard Feinstein chronicled some of his experiences in the Deep South and read a section from his new book “Fire on the Bayou: True Tales from the Civil Rights Battlefront” and attorney Partap Singh Verma, a first generation Indian American shared family stories of migration and activism. Attendees also had the opportunity to join local storyteller and book artist Sushmita Mazumdar in a bookmaking activity.
The audience included council members Del Pepper and John Chapman, former councilman and Living Legend Lonnie Rich, board members and Living Legends Joe Shumard and Melvin Miller, board member Rodger Stephens, former board member Alice Morgan, Living Legend Rosa Byrd and congressional candidate Don Beyer.

2014 Living Legend of Alexandria — Tricia Rodgers
A Successful Life through Serving
By Allen Lomax
Community service is a core value of Tricia Rodgers. Her family and her high school instilled in Rodgers the importance of volunteering and civic engagement. It is so much a part of her life that she is guided by a quote from President George H.W. Bush that says, “Any definition of a successful life must include serving others.” Rodgers definitely has a successful life because she has spent decades serving others.
For over 30 years, Tricia Rodgers has volunteered with, and advocated for, programs that help to improve the lives of Alexandrians. Her volunteer work started in the 1970’s when she was a counselor with an Alexandria program to support women in crisis. Since then she has undertaken many volunteer leadership roles including as a director of the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry, the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium and the Virginia Oral Health Coalition. For the past five years, Rodgers served as co-chair, and now chairs, of the Alexandria Childhood Obesity Action Network (A-COAN), a work group of the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria. She also serves on the Partnership’s Steering Committee.

Theatre Night at MetroStage
Save the Date! Living Legends of Alexandria will host its 2nd annual Theatre Night at MetroStage on Saturday, September 20.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, the occasion will honor those Legends who played key roles in fostering civil rights in Alexandria in the 60s: Ferdinand Day, Nelson Greene Sr., Melvin Miller, Connie Ring, Patsy Ticer, Gwen Menefee Smith and Dorothy Turner. The event will also honor the memories of civil rights activists Mel Bergheim and Vola Lawson.
Enjoy a specially catered reception beginning at 7 p.m. followed by a production of “Three Sistahs” at 8 p.m. Inspired by Chekhov’s Three Sisters, the play is a rich musical tapestry with music by William Hubbard that exposes the souls of three strong women as they reflect the promise of the future, while revealing the pain of the present and their regrets of the past.

LLA Welcomes New Board Members Cindy Savery and Billie Morin
Cynthia (Cindy) Savery first lived in Alexandria in the late 80’s. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1987 where she worked for the local Public Radio station, KNPR in membership, fundraising and special events. Missing the east coast and DC area, she moved back in 1991 and has called Alexandria/Del Ray home ever since. Over the next 22 years, Savery worked at various associations in DC and Alexandria; for five of those years at The Phillips Collection in the development department.
Since retiring in 2013, she has remained active in the art community volunteering at the Smithsonian Castle and the American Art Museum. Recently she used her diverse experience to help with the Art Uniting People art exhibition. Savery is a graduate of the University of Nevada.
Belinda (Billie) Morin has worked as an analyst at the National Institutes of Health for over 14 years providing advice and evaluation for various government programs. For the past seven years her responsibilities have focused on diversity recruitment in the biomedical research workforce. She is currently chair for the Washington, DC Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Federal Executives (NAHFE).
Morin graduated from George Washington University with a B.S. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and an M.A. in Neuropsychology. She is an adjunct faculty at George Mason University teaching Physiological Psychology.

Chamber Business Award Nomination
Living Legends is proud to be considered for an Alexandria Chamber of Commerce business award. We have a long relationship with the Alexandria Chamber and in past years, several Chamber members have been named Living Legends of Alexandria. You can find their full published stories at www.alexandrialegends.com.
They include:
Mike Anderson, Pork Barrel BBQ — Anderson’s philanthropic contributions to the community are many, dating back to the 1980s when his Shooter McGee’s Alexandria Autumn 10K raised more than $50,000 for Special Olympics. Today, in an innovative partnership with ACT for Alexandria, Anderson gives back to more than 75 local nonprofits by donating 25 cents for every burger sold at Holy Cow, Del Ray’s Gourmet Burger Joint.
Rodger Digilio, Alexandria News — When Digilio left Federal employment, he set out to fulfill his vision of restoring historic properties in Alexandria and formed OTV, Inc. In the words of his nominator, “Without his vision, energy and commitment to the city, many historical structures would have been lost not only as buildings but as part of the living history of Alexandria.”
Bud Hart, Hart, Calley, Gibbs & Karp, PC – Hart is a well-connected lawyer who’s in demand and yet sets aside time every week from billable hours to read to children at ALIVE!. “Is it the reading?” asks his nominator, Mike Oliver. Not only that, “It’s a visit by an outsider who is saying [to the kids], “You are pretty important to us.”
David M. Martin, Gold Works — Martin, acting as a businessman, brought his entrepreneurial and political skills to help get recognition and visibility for the upper King Street commercial stretch by lobbying city officials for over a year culminating in the installation of banners and later, holiday lights.
Gant Redmon, Redmon, Peyton & Braswell, LLP — A stalwart in the city’s business community, Redmon chaired the Chamber’s Alexandria 2000 and Beyond Task Force that conducted a long-range visioning process resulting in a 58-page report made available to all Alexandria civic associations and the Alexandria Public Library.
Joan and John Renner, Renner and Company, CPA’s — The Renners proposed to their fellow Rotarians a premiere fundraising event to raise money for local charities that became the annual “Taste For Giving.”
Lonnie Rich, Rich, Rosenthal, Brincefield, Manitta, Dzubin & Kroeger — Rich sees the proximity of National Harbor as an advantage to Alexandria and supports development along the Old Town Alexandria waterfront that is vibrant, relatively low density and maintains full public access along the waterfront.
David Speck, Speck Caudron Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors — As a councilman, Speck was instrumental in bringing the Patent and Trademark Office to Alexandria and imparting the view that the growth of local business and the development of real estate are critical to the City’s long term health.
