In Memory – T. Michael Miller

On January 11, 2017, it was announced that historian Michael Miller passed away in November, 2016.

T. Michael Miller was the personification of Alexandria history. Nobody has written more on the subject than this former City Research Historian. He is the author of such recognized works as “A Seaport Saga: Portrait of Old Alexandria, Virginia” and his two-volume treatise “Artisans and Merchants of Alexandria, Virginia 1780-1820.” Miller served as curator of the Lee-Fendall House Museum; research historian, Alexandria Library, Lloyd House; and Research Historian, Office of Historic Alexandria. A 12 year member of the Alexandria Historical Society Board, he served as President, 1994-1996, and received their annual History Award in 2007. One of his greatest achievements was discovering Freedmen’s Cemetery in 1987, where the remains of 1,800 freed black slaves are buried. As stated by another noted local historian and former Alexandria resident, William Seale, “he has provided Alexandria and the field of American history a fine heritage. Few towns anywhere have the body of published history about themselves that…compares to Miller’s production.”
